Knight House
74 identified the site for this new-build student accommodation block on a former surface car parking site on St George’s Close, close to the University of Sheffield’s academic campus, for client iQ Student Accommodation. 74 then masterplanned the building’s layout and led the planning process, seeking to maximise the development volume. As well as creating the architectural design – with implementation by Cunniff Design – 74 created a full interior scheme for the project, including bedrooms, wayfinding and amenities, combining to create a class-leading student accommodation offer.
Brief
To design a high-quality landmark structure to serve as a focal point for the area which sits harmoniously within the context of both large-scale and smaller-scale existing buildings. To act as lead design architect, architectural design advisor and interior designers on the scheme.
Concept
The design proposal consisted of two main forms; a 6-storey podium and a tower element which rise above the podium by a further 11 storeys to create a 17-storey building overall. 74 studied the building form, the proportions of the apertures and spaces between to create an overall building appearance that is elegant; amplified by the slender vertical emphasis of the facade articulation. Implementation of the scheme was by Cunniff Design from RIBA Stage 4 - a practice 74 has previously worked well with.
